MEMS microphones use acoustic sensors which might be fabricated on semiconductor generation strains using silicon wafers and very automated processes.  Layers of various elements are deposited in addition to a silicon wafer and then the unwanted material is then etched away, creating a moveable membrane and a fixed backplate around a cavity in the
